Being the answer, not one of ten links
For a couple of years now, Google has been answering on its own. Above the results sits a box, the AI Overview, that summarises the answer and cites two or three sources; voice assistants do the same, out loud. Whoever lands in there takes almost all the attention; the rest of the list scrolls by underneath, often without a click.
The box goes to whoever wrote the answer in a form a machine can lift out: the definition up front, question-and-answer blocks, the label that declares "this is an FAQ", the brand name, that is the name of your company or product, declared as an entity rather than a mere word. It is the area where most sites are weakest, because until recently it wasn't needed.
